Sesc is an institution that oversees 38 activity centres that bring together various fields of expertise, articulated through a variety of cultural, educational, sports, leisure and health programmes. This institution also develops national and international partnerships through numerous projects related to music, theatre, dance, circus, literature and the visual arts.

Sesc's activities are guided by its educational ethics as well as the pursuit of broad social well-being, in which the term "culture" is understood in its full spectrum. In this sense, the full accessibility to the spaces and contents offered by the institution enhances the democratisation of cultural values as a form of individual autonomy, and the practice of citizenship.

Sesc 24 de Maio opened in August 19th, 2017 and, by January 31st, 2018, the venue had already received 1,257,455 visitors.

Located on a prominent site along the East River, against the backdrop of rapidly built skyscraper condominiums, the 22,000-square-foot Queens Public Library at Hunters Point stands as a public building and public park, bringing community-devoted space to the Long Island City waterfront.

Resisting recent trends of incorporating public libraries and much needed social space within high-end residential towers, the Hunters Point Library stands independently, rising with a minimal footprint on its 32,000-square-foot site to offer maximum surrounding green space to the local community and becoming an integrated part of the vibrant public park that lines the river's edge.

Along the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River, five decommissioned aviation fuel tanks and the surrounding site have been given new life and relevancy. Over six years, together with the newly created underground space, and two standalone galleries, these iconic tanks were transformed from fuel containers into a vibrant new art and cultural centre.

Conceived of as both an art centre and open park, the project pays tribute to the site's industrial past. It seeks to dissolve the conventional perceptions of art institutions with formidable walls and definitive boundaries that separate the museum-goers from those who are not. It sets out to be an art centre for all, a museum without boundaries.

Situated right in the centre of Songyang County, the Confusion Temple and Chenghuang Temple district contains characterised buildings of different historical periods. However, this once spiritual and cultural centre has been deprived of vitality for decades, lacking economic activities and community environmental management.

With the use of various historical remains, this project aims to present a complete and continuous historical segment by carefully evaluating conditions as well as accommodability of the relics and protecting them correspondingly with hierarchical strategy. Through the negotiation with local residents, the design restores the original urban texture, regenerates the public space around two temples and opens surrounding pathways into the city circulations.

The brief called for the design of an environment that would facilitate and enhance trans-disciplinary research within the African context. The facility should be a place where collective research is done with a strong focus on science leadership development.

Future Africa is to provide an integrated live-/work environment for post-doctorate students from all cultures and backgrounds, fostering fellowship, understanding and collaboration among the vast diversity of cultures and disciplines on our continent.

International Urban Project(IUPA)

More than ever, architecture has to prove that it is strong. To date, technological advancements, climate change, digitisation as well as demographic shift, new developments in our working and mobility environment have been the drivers of transformation in planning and design. Now, the necessary response to the current pandemic crisis can be added to that list. Therefore, it demands resilient and, at the same time, flexible solutions in architecture and urban planning.

But the buildings in our neighbourhoods are not lumps of clay that can be reshaped at short notice to meet our needs. This is why there can only be one conclusion: we need strong architecture and urban development which can not only react flexibly, but which is also resilient and permanent.

Bauwelt magazine from Berlin and World Architecture WA magazine from Beijing believe that exemplary projects, once implemented, can provide an incredibly important impetus.

The second edition of the IUPA - International Urban Project Award – supported by Messe München – aims to engage the debate on the values of architecture in an international discourse. The main criterion for the selected projects is a strong urban design that not only withstands challenging times, but also empowers. Their realisation in recent, visible areas are no more than five years old.
